There are several ethical problems in the food industry as demonstrated in the documentary Food Inc. First, there is a lot of secrecy on the content of foods that reach consumers. Secondly, there is the mass industrialization of food such as chicken as companies aim to increase their profits. Thirdly, the food industry is passing false information in its advertisements. Deceptive advertising is morally wrong and hence unethical. Manufacturing companies engage in deceptive advertising so as to attract more customers to purchase a product. The practice is unethical as it makes consumers use products whose content or ingredients do not match to the advertisements (Ferrell, & Fraedrich, 2009).
For instance, people may consume milk and milk product because they believe the products have high levels of vitamin D. Unfortunately, milk lacks natural vitamin D unless it is introduced artificially. The federal trade commission under section 43(a) of the Lanham Act prohibits false advertising. The Act argues that customers have the legal right to know what they are buying. CEOs of manufacturing companies can also lead the fight against deceptive advertising. Adopting transparency in advertising will involve giving adequate information on the ingredients that are used to make any food. Similarly, it will involve indicating the nutritional and dietary value of each product. Consumers have the right to know the content of the foods they are purchasing. It is better if a customer purchases a product knowing its actual nutritional value and components rather than purchasing a product without its full information. The provision of adequate information gives the customer an upper hand when it comes to making purchasing decisions. It is unethical to falsify or withhold information as it amounts to lies (Ferrell, & Fraedrich, 2009).
